Kazan, Tatarstan
A city of 1.2 million inhabitants and the capital of Tatarstan, Russia. Half of the population is Moslem Tartar and other half Russian. Kazan’s history is long and rich and the city has preserved the diversity contributed by its two cultural traditions.
Kazan is a major port on the Volga River and is an important industrial, agricultural and natural gas production center. It lies 500 miles east of Moscow. Kazan State University is one of the oldest and most prestigious academic institutions in Russia.
